Can I Use My Insurance With GoodRx?
GoodRx is not compatible with health insurance or government programs such as Medicare and Medicaid. Therefore, you cannot use GoodRx and insurance at the same time.
Compare the price on GoodRx to your insurance co-payment to determine which is cheaper. GoodRx can always be substituted for insurance coverage.
According to GoodRx, “GoodRx coupons outperform insurance frequently.” GoodRx users paid less than the average insurance contribution 37% of the time for the top 100 drugs, saving up to 54%.’
Also, from the frequently asked questions page of GoodRx, here is a useful piece of advice:
“If you choose to use a GoodRx coupon or your GoodRx Gold membership, it’s important to ask the pharmacist not to run your prescription through your insurance or Medicare (Beware: This tends to happen often). Ask that the pharmacist use the coupon or Gold card to process the transaction as cash instead.”
Is My Medical Data Safe With GoodRx?
GoodRx asserts that it generates revenue through advertisements and referral fees, as opposed to the sale of personal medical information. The company has stated that it will not do this.
However, GoodRx occasionally shares data. According to the business:
GoodRx shares data for advertising and analytics purposes, as is common among businesses. “And the small amount of data shared cannot be traced back to a specific individual,” a GoodRx representative told Clark.com. GoodRx has also gone above and beyond by providing all users with an opt-out and data deletion option.

Do Pharmacies Lose Money When They Use GoodRx?
Unfortunately, many pharmacies lose money by accepting GoodRx. Prescription margins are already razor thin, and GoodRx’s fee on top of the PBM will almost certainly drive them into the red.
So, why do they do it?
Some pharmacies believe that by accepting these coupons, they will be able to attract more customers, allowing them to sell additional non-prescription products and possibly earn future business from the customer.
Even though the pharmacy will lose money on each prescription, the additional business is expected to compensate. Another reason why many independent, non-chain pharmacies refuse or despise GoodRx is because of this. Prescription drugs account for the vast majority of their revenue.
Unlike CVS or Walgreens, an independent pharmacy is unlikely to be able to offset a loss on a single prescription by selling convenience store items (i.e. greeting cards, snacks, etc.). This can be disastrous for smaller pharmacies that are unable to absorb such losses.
How does GoodRx make money?
When a prescription is filled using a GoodRx code, PBMs typically pay referral fees to GoodRx. This is the primary source of revenue for GoodRx. Pharmacy benefits managers, also known as PBMs, collaborate with health insurance providers to manage a wide range of administrative responsibilities that are connected to prescription medications. Concerning the role they play in the rise of overall costs and the prices of prescription medications, they have been the subject of much discussion.
The following is an overview of the various ways in which GoodRx generates revenue from PBM referral fees:
- The customer provides a coupon for GoodRx that is still active.
- Similar to how insurance companies do it, pharmacies need to enter their BIN and PCN numbers into the PBM.
- PBM will provide a price, and the pharmacy will be charged a fee that is proportional to the price.
Competitors of GoodRx
Although using GoodRx has resulted in significant financial savings for me over the past few years, you should keep in mind that it is not your only available choice.
When I was researching this, I also checked out LowestMed, which is a website and mobile app that is very similar to GoodRx. After completing the acquisition of LowestMed in May of 2018, RetailMeNot renamed the service RetailMeNot RxSaver.
Checking either of these services before filling your next prescription can help you ensure that you are getting the best possible deal on your medication.
